Over the past few years, I’ve helped dozens of consumers fight battles against some of the UK’s biggest companies — Santander, Scottish Power, British Gas, and others.
And one theme keeps coming up again and again:
The Ombudsman isn’t always the solution we’re told it is.
Let me share a few examples from real cases:
👉 Santander – A client with “persistent debt” complaint went to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Despite clear evidence of unfair treatment and excessive charges, they sided with Santander. No remedy. No accountability.
👉 Scottish Power – After going through Ofgem’s process and getting nowhere, we took them to court … and won. The Ombudsman route delivered nothing. Small Claims Court delivered justice.
👉 British Gas – Same story. Ombudsman: dead end. Court: successful judgment.
👉 The Furniture Ombudsman – Based on my experience, completely ineffective. When a vulnerable customer was mis-sold an expensive item, they simply weren’t interested. Again, the courts provided the remedy.
So the big question is:
Are Ombudsmen still fit for purpose in 2025?
Consumers are told:
“Don’t worry — there’s an Ombudsman. They’ll sort it.”
But the reality for many people is very different.
Too often:
❌ Delays
❌ Copy-and-paste responses
❌ A tendency to side with the big companies
❌ No meaningful enforcement
❌ No compensation unless the business agrees
Meanwhile, the person who’s been wronged is left financially and emotionally drained.
Why I’m Speaking Out
Because ordinary people don’t realise they have better options:
âś” Small Claims Court
âś” Section 75
âś” Chargeback
âś” Data Subject Access Requests
âś” Regulator escalations
âś” Mediation
âś” Legal-standard complaint letters
I’ve won every case I’ve taken to court — even after an Ombudsman had failed to act.
That tells you something.
What Consumers Need Now
A system that is:
🟢 Independent
🟢 Timely
🟢 Enforceable
🟢 Transparent
🟢 Willing to challenge corporate behaviour
Right now, too many Ombudsman schemes simply don’t meet that standard.
Why This Matters for My Work
At Golden Shield Consumer Services, I help people who feel stuck, ignored, or fobbed off by large companies and broken complaint systems.
If you feel like:
- You’re not being listened to
- Your complaint has been dismissed
- You’ve hit a brick wall
- You’re getting nowhere with the Ombudsman
… then you’re exactly the person I can help.
Final thought
Consumers shouldn’t need to take giant corporations to court just to get fairness.
But until things change, you deserve someone in your corner who knows how to fight these battles — and win.
If you’ve been let down by an Ombudsman decision or a big company, feel free to message me privately. I might be able to help.
